Matter of personal preference., E.g. I am not a big fan of lots of extra laces flopping around when I lace up. So, I buy them shorter. Other guys like the extra lacing.

You can use either the waxed or the non-waxed laces. Its a personal preference. The benefit of the waxed laces is that they will stay tighter for a longer period of time due to the stiffness of the laces.
