Bauer Profile 950 Goal Mask

New for 2012, the Bauer Profile 950 goal mask is an extremely protective, slightly modified version of the popular Bauer 960 goal mask - the #1 goalie mask in the NHL. Goalies with a wider facial profile who prefer a slightly heavier mask will love the fit and feel of the 950.The shell of the 950 is constructed of fiberglass with Kevlar reinforcements in the forehead and the chin for added strength. The shell is thicker than the shell found in the NME series masks which make them very impact resistant and durable. Pronounced ribs in the forehead insure that pucks will not squarely impact the shell - they will simply glance away. The chin and throat protection on the mask is projected foreward somewhat, and the bottom of the mask is flared up to keep the mask from getting caught against the goalie's chest and arm protection.Interior foams of the 950 are made of layed vinyl-nitrile foams, with a perforated top layer for additional ventilation and weight savings. The interior foam is mechanically attached to the mask, making it easy to remove for cleaning or mask painting. The cage of the 950 is made of round bar stainless steel, and the grid lines have been designed for optimal vision. * Fiberglass shell reinforced with Kevlar fiber * Stainless steel cage * Mechanically attached dual density liner * Padded mask bag and extra sweatband included

Question

Unfortunately, the flat-wire can't be switched between the two. I have used the NME7, and the honest truth is that the flat-wire cage can be a little risky. The pros is it opens up the visibility of the change; however, if you are playing at a JV or higher caliber level, a slapshot can bend the cage so just be aware of that it may not be overly durable. This goes for the materials as well. The NME 7 is composed of fiberglass while the 950 is made of kevlar. Personally, if you are planning on it to last sometime, go with the profile 950.

The differences between the NME 7 and the Profile 950 are:

- 950 is a thicker shell that has more fiberglass in it, so it's a little bit heavier. Both masks have kevlar in the forehead and chin.

- 950 has a dual layer of VN foam, but it doesn't have the gel in the "pressure point" areas like the NME7 has.

- 950 only comes in one size, NME 7 comes in 3 fits - Fit 1, Fit 2 and Fit 3.

The flatwire cage for the NME 7 will not fit the 950, unfortunately.

Here are the main differences between the two masks: (960 on left / 950 on right)

single density, soft vn liner / dual density liner w/ perforated outer liner

960 liner is glued in / 950 liner is attached with screws for easy removal when cleaning or painting

hand laid fiberglass shell w/ kevlar / injection molded fiberglass shell w/ Kevlar

960 made in Canada / 950 made overseas

There are two main differences. First, it is made over seas rather than in Canada like the 960. Second, it has different foams. The foam in the 960 is more rigid and not as soft as the 950. As far as I know, the reason for the more rigid foam in the 960 is that it has been used in the helmets for years and it has been very successful making the helmet practically bullet proof. I have the 960, and I can take a clapper from the hash marks to the head and not feel a thing nor do I get the ringing noise.

No - the Profile 950 does not come with extra foam for adjustment purposes. It uses two layers of VN foam - a a harder foam against the shell and a softer foam at the "pressure points" for comfort.

I would recommend the 940 for the mid to lower levels of play. The 940 would be comparable to the Bauer NME7, and there are quite a few Minnesota High School goalie who use this mask.
